My Background

My name is Dr Andrew Morgan and I’m a Clinical Psychologist. I’ve been working in the NHS for over ten years and in that time I’ve been lucky enough to work with clients from all backgrounds and walks of life. I set up this private service a few years ago so that I could have more control over how I practiced psychology.

I grew up in New Ferry on the Wirral. My original degree was in Philosophy and Politics and I moved on to psychology later in life. Clinical Psychology was a good fit for me because I always wanted to understand myself and other people better. I got my first Psychology qualification from Liverpool Hope University before doing my doctorate at Lancaster University.

My Experience

I began my clinical career working in secure services for people with psychosis and other severe psychological problems. Through my training I have worked in specialist services for children, older adults, people with learning disabilities and people from minority ethic groups.

In recent years I have specialised in helping people who are suffering from physical health conditions and from anxiety. There are many different reasons why people might feel anxious which keeps my work varied and challenging.

My Values

I believe that psychological distress is something that can, and does, happen to anyone who finds themselves in a difficult situation. Even though we might feel highly distressed or overwhelmed, this does not mean that it is our fault or there is something wrong with us. It also does not mean we cannot do something about it. I believe both that life is extremely difficult at times and that people have what it takes to cope with it, even if they sometimes need some extra support.

I try and provide therapy that combines the personal knowledge and expertise of the client (their aims and experiences and values and relationships etc) with my knowledge and expertise of psychology. This results in a bespoke approach unique to the individual, but one which is informed by fundamental psychological knowledge and experience of clinical practice.

I believe it is essential that therapy is a good fit for the individual and one size doesn’t fit everyone. I also believe that we can learn from the experiences of other people and psychology research in general.

My Other Work

I conduct and review psychology research and you can view some of the work I’ve been involved in here. I also lecture and write about psychology, and supervise upcoming psychologists.

My Professional Status

I am registered with the professional body for practitioner psychologists, the HCPC. You can view my entry on the official register here. I have private indemnity insurance and am registered with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO). I am also a registered member of the Association for Contextual Behavioral Science and an accredited EMDR practitioner.
